PCB rejects hybrid model, urges India to discuss concerns ahead of 2025 Champions Trophy.
Lahore, November 18, 2024 – The ongoing tension surrounding India’s potential participation in the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan in February-March, has raised concerns within the cricketing world. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, Naqvi, addressed the media today to discuss India’s reservations and Pakistan’s unwavering stance on hosting the event exclusively within their borders.
Naqvi firmly stated that the PCB would not entertain the hybrid model that has been advocated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). “Pakistan’s pride and respect is our priority. The Champions Trophy will take place in our country only, we will not accept the Hybrid Model,” he declared, speaking outside Lahore’s iconic Gaddafi Stadium.
The BCCI’s proposition of a hybrid model stems from India’s security concerns following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, after which India has refrained from playing in Pakistan. Naqvi, however, emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and secure tournament. “If India has any concerns about sending their team to Pakistan, they must talk to us and we will remove them. I don’t think there is any reason for India not to come to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy,” he asserted.
Naqvi urged India to engage in dialogue, expressing confidence in resolving any potential issues. “If India has any issues, they can come to us, and we will sort them out,” he said, reiterating the PCB’s readiness to address security concerns and other challenges diplomatically.
Further highlighting Pakistan’s stance, Naqvi added, “We stand firm on our stance that we will not go for a hybrid model. We’re waiting for the ICC to announce the schedule as soon as possible.”
The upcoming months will be critical in determining whether India and Pakistan can navigate these diplomatic and logistical hurdles, with the eyes of cricket fans and international sports bodies watching closely for developments.
