The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has called for the resignation of its Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal following her controversial remarks regarding senior AAP leader Atishi. Maliwal criticized the decision to appoint Atishi as the next Chief Minister of Delhi, labeling her as a “dummy CM” and raising concerns about her family’s past support for a mercy plea for Afzal Guru, a convicted terrorist.
Senior AAP leaders, including MLA Dilip Pandey, condemned Maliwal’s statements, accusing her of aligning with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) despite being elected to the Rajya Sabha by AAP. Pandey suggested that Maliwal should step down and seek a seat from the BJP if she continues to follow its narrative.
Maliwal’s remarks came shortly after Atishi was announced as the successor to Arvind Kejriwal, following his decision to step down amid ongoing legal challenges. Kejriwal, embroiled in the Delhi liquor policy scandal, decided to temporarily relinquish his post as Chief Minister to rebuild the public’s trust ahead of elections.
Atishi, currently Delhi’s Education Minister, has not yet responded publicly to Maliwal’s statements, while AAP leaders have strongly backed her leadership capabilities. The party remains firm in its demand for Maliwal’s resignation to avoid further internal strife.
