During a Supreme Court hearing on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s bail plea related to the liquor policy case, his lawyer, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, made a striking remark: “Nowadays, ‘Trump’ is a dangerous word.” The comment was part of an argument about the violation of Article 21 (right to life and personal liberty) if Kejriwal’s bail were to be denied. Singhvi was drawing a parallel between the term “Trump” and a broader commentary on how certain words or figures, like the former U.S. president, carry connotations that have evolved to represent danger or controversy.
Kejriwal’s legal team argued that the CBI had failed to arrest him for nearly two years, only doing so after he was granted bail in a related Enforcement Directorate case. They emphasized that several co-accused, including Manish Sisodia, have already been released on bail. The defense described Kejriwal’s arrest as an “insurance arrest,” suggesting it was made only as a safeguard after the prior legal victory.
On the other hand, the CBI, represented by Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, opposed the bail plea, criticizing what they called “adventurism” by Kejriwal for directly approaching the Supreme Court instead of following the usual legal route through the trial court. The court’s decision on the plea is still pending
