In an electrifying political turn, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal issued a bold challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to implement free electricity in all NDA-ruled states ahead of the upcoming Delhi elections. The stakes? Kejriwal himself promises to actively campaign for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) if Modi pulls off this massive feat.

Speaking at ‘Janta Ki Adalat’ in Delhi, Kejriwal delivered a speech that has stirred the political pot. He wasn’t just campaigning for votes—he was calling out the BJP’s “double engine” governments in various states, claiming they have failed the people, particularly in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir. According to Kejriwal, while the BJP’s model promises development, in reality, it leads to “double loot and double corruption.

AAP’s Stronghold on Social Welfare

Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP has always been known for its innovative social welfare programs, and free electricity is one of the most celebrated achievements in Delhi. Under the AAP government, Delhi residents receive free electricity up to a certain limit, a policy that has won hearts and votes in past elections.

In his latest challenge to the BJP, Kejriwal urged Modi to implement this very model across all 22 NDA-ruled states. And he made his point clear: if Modi makes this happen before the February 2025 Delhi elections, Kejriwal will not only praise the BJP but will also campaign for them—an unprecedented offer from the head of a rival political party.

Criticizing the BJP’s Governance

Kejriwal didn’t stop at the challenge; he also critiqued the BJP’s governance model. He highlighted the party’s actions in states like Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, predicting that the “double engine” model of state and central BJP rule is on the brink of collapse in these regions. Kejriwal emphasized that citizens are suffering under BJP governance, and this sentiment will be reflected in the coming elections.

The AAP leader also lambasted the BJP’s treatment of workers and civil servants in Delhi, accusing the party of halting salaries for essential workers like home guards and removing bus marshals, a decision he believes shows the BJP’s indifference to the common people.

The Strategy Behind the Challenge

Kejriwal’s challenge is not just a random call-out; it’s a calculated move to strengthen AAP’s position ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections. By focusing on free electricity, a cornerstone of AAP’s successful governance in Delhi, he’s setting a high bar for the BJP. Should the BJP accept the challenge and implement free electricity, Kejriwal would still benefit by positioning himself as the instigator of such a people-centric policy.

However, it’s unlikely that the BJP would fully embrace this strategy. The BJP’s governance model has historically focused on infrastructural development and financial reforms, contrasting with AAP’s focus on providing free basic services like water and electricity. But by putting the issue on the table, Kejriwal has managed to draw attention to one of his party’s key strengths while challenging the BJP to match it.

A Record of Social Welfare Success

Since coming to power, Kejriwal’s AAP has built its political platform on delivering basic services to the people of Delhi. Free electricity, water, healthcare, and education have been the cornerstone of AAP’s governance strategy, making Kejriwal immensely popular among middle and lower-income groups. This focus on welfare has allowed AAP to differentiate itself from larger national parties like BJP and Congress, positioning itself as a people-first party.

In fact, AAP’s success with these policies is one of the reasons it recently triumphed in the Punjab state elections. By promoting welfare-oriented governance, Kejriwal has consistently garnered support across social strata, creating a unique political identity for his party.

A Political Masterstroke?

Kejriwal’s public challenge to Modi is more than just a political gimmick; it’s a shrewd strategy to draw attention to his own government’s achievements while exposing the BJP’s governance challenges. By making free electricity a central issue, Kejriwal is aiming to capture the hearts of voters who value accessible public services.

Whether the BJP will respond with a counter-offer remains to be seen. But one thing is certain—Kejriwal has placed a massive spotlight on an issue that resonates deeply with everyday citizens, particularly in states grappling with high electricity bills and limited services.

Conclusion

As the Delhi elections draw closer, Kejriwal’s challenge to Modi over free electricity has added a new dynamic to the political landscape. While the AAP leader’s offer to campaign for BJP may seem far-fetched, it highlights Kejriwal’s confidence in his governance model and his willingness to back a people-first approach. Now, the ball is in Modi’s court: will he rise to the challenge, or will this be an opportunity for Kejriwal to further solidify his hold over Delhi’s electorate?
