NASA has issued an alert about two asteroids, 2020 GE and 2024 RO11, which are speeding towards Earth at high velocity and are expected to make their closest approach on September 24, 2024. While the news may sound alarming, NASA assures that these asteroids pose no threat to our planet.
Asteroid 2020 GE, roughly the size of a bus (26 feet in diameter), will pass about 410,000 miles from Earth, which is slightly further than the Moon’s orbit. The second asteroid, 2024 RO11, is much larger, measuring around 120 feet in diameter. However, it will fly by at a much greater distance of approximately 4.58 million miles. While these asteroids won’t be visible to the naked eye, they can be observed with specialized telescopes, providing a rare opportunity for astronomers and space enthusiasts.
Despite their relatively close pass, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) emphasizes that there is no risk of collision with Earth. These encounters are part of the ongoing movement of objects within our solar system, and NASA closely monitors such Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) to study their trajectories and characteristics.
Interestingly, another asteroid, 2024 RK7, will also pass by Earth on September 25, adding to the celestial spectacle. This object is about 100 feet in diameter but will safely pass at a significant distance.
Asteroids like these typically reside in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, but occasionally, their orbits bring them near Earth. These events serve as reminders of the dynamic nature of our solar system, allowing scientists to collect valuable data and observe the behavior of these space rocks.
In summary, while the approach of these asteroids on September 24 may sound ominous, NASA assures that there is no danger. Instead, it presents an exciting opportunity to witness and learn more about these fascinating celestial bodies(DNA India)(TheDailyGuardian).
