Union Home Minister Amit Shah, speaking on the occasion of Hindi Diwas, reaffirmed the integral relationship between Hindi and the various regional languages of India. In his address, Shah emphasized that Hindi has an “unbreakable” bond with every Indian language, underscoring its role in fostering national unity. He stressed the significance of all Indian languages, highlighting them as essential parts of the nation’s cultural and linguistic heritage. According to Shah, these languages play a vital role in the country’s development, and their preservation and promotion are key to ensuring a prosperous future.

Shah further marked the importance of Hindi as India celebrates 75 years of it being the official language of the nation. He mentioned that since its adoption as the official language, Hindi has been instrumental in bridging communication gaps across the diverse linguistic landscape of the country, helping to unify citizens despite their varied linguistic backgrounds. However, he also pointed out that Hindi’s strength lies in its harmony with other regional languages, and not in superseding them. Shah stated that the nation’s collective progress hinges on the enrichment of all Indian languages, which should work together with Hindi to foster a stronger, more inclusive India (Devdiscourse)(The Siasat Daily).

On this Hindi Diwas, Shah urged citizens to take pride in their respective regional languages while also recognizing the importance of Hindi as a common thread that connects the country’s vast diversity. He called for initiatives to further develop and enrich both Hindi and regional languages, envisioning a multilingual India that progresses toward becoming a developed nation. His message emphasized the need to maintain linguistic diversity while working in tandem to build national cohesion.

The celebration of Hindi Diwas, observed annually on September 14, commemorates the adoption of Hindi as one of India’s official languages by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. It serves as a reminder of the importance of Hindi in public communication and its role in the country’s administrative and cultural fabric.

Amit Shah’s address comes amid ongoing discussions on language policy in India, where regional identities often assert the importance of preserving local languages. His remarks about Hindi’s role in fostering unity while respecting linguistic diversity seek to strike a balance in a country that is home to over 1,600 languages and dialects (Devdiscourse)(The Siasat Daily).
