As the vote counting for the 2024 Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir Assembly elections begins today, the political landscape is brimming with anticipation. Both states are witnessing intense competition between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress, and the day promises to be eventful as the final results unfold.

The Scene in Haryana

Haryana, a state with 90 assembly seats, is seeing a fierce battle between the BJP and Congress. The stakes are high for both parties, with the BJP seeking to form the government for the third consecutive time, while Congress is determined to regain power. According to exit polls, Congress is expected to perform well, with some predicting a comfortable majority of 50-58 seats. This marks a significant shift from the last elections, where the BJP held sway over the state.

However, the BJP remains hopeful, with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini rejecting the exit poll predictions and expressing confidence in securing a third term. BJP’s National General Secretary Tarun Chugh stated that the party’s track record over the past 10 years will earn them another mandate, emphasizing Prime Minister Modi’s development work and social policies.

Congress, led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a frontrunner for the chief ministerial position, has campaigned aggressively, highlighting the BJP’s alleged misgovernance over the past decade. Congress Haryana Chief Udai Bhan believes that the party will outperform its 2005 success, where it won 67 seats, citing widespread dissatisfaction with the BJP government as a key factor in their expected victory.

Adding to the complexity is the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has campaigned independently but is not expected to win a significant number of seats, according to early predictions. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, however, has claimed that no government can be formed without his party’s support, indicating the potential for post-election alliances if the results are too close to call.

The Battle in Jammu & Kashmir

In Jammu & Kashmir, elections were held after a decade, and the results are eagerly awaited. The political scenario here is slightly more fragmented, with the Congress-National Conference (NC) alliance vying against the BJP. The exit polls predict a hung assembly, but the Congress-NC alliance is considered to have the edge, especially in the Kashmir Valley. In contrast, the BJP is expected to retain its dominance in the Jammu region, with BJP leader Ravinder Raina expressing confidence in securing 35 seats, potentially enough to form a coalition government with independents and regional players.

The Congress-NC alliance, on the other hand, has been vocal about its intention to drive the BJP out of power in the Union Territory. Congress leader Tariq Hameed Karra is optimistic about the alliance’s chances, citing strong public sentiment against the BJP and aligning with regional interests. Omar Abdullah, the vice-president of NC, has also expressed hope that the alliance’s hard work will be reflected in today’s results.

The Role of Independents and Smaller Parties

In both states, the role of independents and smaller regional parties may prove crucial. In Jammu & Kashmir, independents could hold the key to government formation if neither the BJP nor the Congress-NC alliance secures a clear majority. Similarly, in Haryana, smaller parties or independents may emerge as kingmakers if the contest is tighter than expected. AAP, despite its limited predicted success, could still play a role in coalition negotiations depending on the final seat distribution.

How the Day Will Unfold

As the counting progresses throughout the day, the initial trends will offer a glimpse into which way the political winds are blowing. Security has been heightened across both states, particularly in Jammu & Kashmir, where authorities have taken extensive measures to ensure a smooth and peaceful counting process. In Haryana, counting is taking place at 93 centres spread across 22 districts, and all eyes will be on key constituencies like Gurugram, Panchkula, and Karnal.

The final results are expected to be declared later in the day, and while exit polls have given an edge to Congress in Haryana and a potential hung assembly in Jammu & Kashmir, election outcomes can often defy predictions. Both BJP and Congress are preparing for a long day of uncertainty, as party workers, leaders, and the public eagerly await the final tallies that will determine the political future of these crucial states.

Potential Impact of the Results

The results of the Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir elections are likely to have significant national implications. A victory for Congress in Haryana would bolster the party’s standing as it prepares for the 2024 general elections, signaling a resurgence in a state that has been under BJP rule for the last decade. For the BJP, retaining power in both states would be a reaffirmation of its dominance in Indian politics and a testament to the party’s ability to defy anti-incumbency.

In Jammu & Kashmir, the results will be even more consequential, as the region has seen political instability since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019. A victory for the Congress-NC alliance could be interpreted as a rejection of the BJP’s policies in the region, while a BJP win would solidify the party’s foothold in the sensitive border state.

Conclusion

As the counting of votes unfolds, Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir are set to witness a close contest between the BJP and Congress, with both states potentially swinging in different directions. While Congress appears poised for a comeback in Haryana, the situation in Jammu & Kashmir remains uncertain, with the possibility of a hung assembly looming large. The final results, expected later today, will determine the political trajectory of both states and have broader implications for national politics.
