On September 23, 2024, Atishi took charge as the Chief Minister of Delhi, marking a historic moment for the city’s political landscape. This transition followed the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal, who had been the face of Delhi’s government for over a decade. Atishi, known for her educational reforms and governance capabilities, became the eighth and youngest Chief Minister of Delhi.
In a symbolic gesture paying tribute to Kejriwal, Atishi placed an empty chair beside her in the Chief Minister’s office, symbolizing the leader’s absence yet undeniable influence. She likened her situation to the epic Ramayana, comparing her role to Bharat governing in Lord Rama’s absence, ruling with his ‘khadaun’ (sandals) as a representation of the true ruler. This deeply symbolic gesture not only showcased Atishi’s respect for Kejriwal but also reinforced her intent to govern in his shadow, ensuring continuity of his policies
During her swearing-in ceremony at the Raj Niwas, Atishi touched Kejriwal’s feet, seeking his blessings. She expressed her determination to uphold his legacy, emphasizing that the current government would focus on the welfare of Delhi’s citizens by continuing the work initiated under Kejriwal’s leadership. Environmental issues, education, healthcare, and infrastructure are expected to remain at the forefront of the government’s agenda.
Other AAP leaders, including Gopal Rai and Kailash Gahlot, took their oaths as ministers in the new cabinet. Each of them reinforced the message that this government would strive to deliver on Kejriwal’s vision, especially in critical areas like air pollution control, free electricity, and education. Gahlot particularly emphasized the goal of bringing Kejriwal back into office, signaling that this leadership change might only be temporary until the next elections(India Today).
Atishi’s leadership as Delhi’s Chief Minister is seen as a significant step forward for AAP, positioning her as a capable and respectful leader who is deeply committed to the legacy of Arvind Kejriwal. With the state elections approaching, her leadership will be crucial in determining the future trajectory of the party and its governance in Delhi.
