The debate over who is the best Test batter between Virat Kohli and Joe Root has gained momentum, with Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist weighing in on the matter. During a discussion on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Gilchrist was asked to compare the two modern-day greats. He acknowledged Kohli’s dominance in white-ball formats, particularly in T20Is and ODIs, where Kohli’s records are extraordinary.
However, when the focus shifted to Test cricket, especially in recent years, Gilchrist admitted that Joe Root has been in exceptional form, noting that Root’s statistics make him one of England’s best-ever Test batters. Root recently surpassed Kohli in Test centuries, fueling further comparisons.
Despite this, Gilchrist pointed out a key difference: Root has never scored a Test century in Australia, whereas Kohli has hit six centuries on Australian soil, including a memorable knock of 123 runs in Perth, which Gilchrist hailed as one of the best centuries he has ever witnessed. This performance tilted the scales in favor of Kohli, especially in Australian conditions.
Michael Vaughan, another prominent figure in the debate, agreed with Gilchrist’s assessment of Kohli’s superiority in Australia but favored Root in most other conditions. With both players still active and several Test matches coming up, the contest between these two modern batting giants is far from settled.
Kohli has the opportunity to close the gap on Root’s century count in the coming months, and fans can expect more exciting discussions on this subject as both players continue to shine
