In a significant political move ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, renowned Indian wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have joined the Congress party and will be contesting as its candidates. The announcement came on September 4, 2024, following their meeting with senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Vinesh Phogat is expected to run for the Julana constituency, a seat currently held by the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP). The constituency for Bajrang Punia has not been officially confirmed yet. Their entry into politics comes after a year-long protest against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, whom they accused of sexual harassment.
This development adds a new dimension to the upcoming elections, as both wrestlers hold significant influence in Haryana, particularly in the sports community. Their candidacy is seen as a strategic move by the Congress to strengthen its position in the state.
