The official YouTube channel of the Supreme Court of India was hacked on September 20, 2024, leading to the unauthorized streaming of cryptocurrency-related content. The channel, which typically broadcasts live hearings and important public interest cases, displayed videos promoting XRP, a cryptocurrency developed by Ripple Labs. The hacker replaced previous court videos with live content falsely attributed to Ripple’s CEO Brad Garlinghouse, predicting XRP price movements.
This incident is concerning given the Supreme Court’s reliance on YouTube for streaming major cases, such as the suo motu case involving the rape and murder of a Kolkata doctor, which had been previously broadcast on the channel. Past videos were made private by the hackers.
In response, the Supreme Court’s IT team collaborated with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to investigate and address the breach. The YouTube channel’s name and bio were also altered to reflect a digital payment network associated with cryptocurrency, raising further concerns about cybersecurity vulnerabilities

The hacking incident underscores the growing trend of high-profile cyberattacks targeting digital platforms, emphasizing the need for enhanced cybersecurity protocols, especially for public institutions.
