Prashant Kishor, the chief of the Jan Suraaj party, has vowed to end Bihar’s liquor ban “within one hour” if his party is elected to power. Kishor criticized the current prohibition law implemented by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, calling it a “sham” that has led to the illegal distribution of alcohol, and has deprived the state of an estimated Rs 20,000 crore in excise revenue. He also pointed out that politicians and bureaucrats benefit from the black market liquor trade.
Speaking ahead of the launch of his political party on October 2, 2024, Kishor also emphasized his commitment to “politics of merit” and suggested that the liquor ban is more about political posturing than actual benefits for society. He claims that while many political parties fear losing the support of women by opposing the prohibition, his stance is based on the larger interest of the state.
In addition to his views on prohibition, Kishor has been critical of both Nitish Kumar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav, arguing that both have failed Bihar over the past 30 years. He criticized Yadav’s educational qualifications and leadership capabilities, suggesting that his political ascent is largely due to his family background rather than merit.
