During his visit to Singapore in September 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a unique pitch to global business leaders, using the famed Banarasi paan to promote investment in Kashi (Varanasi), his parliamentary constituency. Speaking at a Business Leaders’ Summit, Modi highlighted Varanasi’s rich cultural heritage, which is closely associated with Banarasi paan, a traditional betel leaf delicacy. He humorously suggested that if anyone wanted to truly enjoy paan, they should invest in Kashi, adding a light-hearted cultural touch to his serious call for investment.
Modi’s remarks came as part of a broader initiative to encourage deeper economic ties between India and Singapore. He emphasized India’s ongoing economic reforms, designed to attract global investments and foster innovation. In line with this, an “Invest India” office was announced in Singapore, aimed at helping Singaporean investors explore business opportunities in India. The Prime Minister also met with prominent business leaders and held discussions on strengthening bilateral economic relations.
