A Pakistani national, Muhammad Shahzeb Khan, residing in Canada, was arrested on September 4, 2024, for plotting a terrorist attack in New York City. He intended to carry out a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn, coinciding with the anniversary of the Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023. Khan, who supported ISIS, had been communicating with undercover law enforcement agents, instructing them to acquire weapons and other materials for the attack. His goal was to “slaughter as many Jewish people as possible” in support of ISIS (DevDiscourse)(Justice).
Khan’s planning had been under investigation since November 2023, when he began distributing ISIS propaganda and expressing his desire to form an offline ISIS cell. He emphasized October 7, 2024, as a significant date due to its symbolic connection to the Hamas anniversary (Hindustan Times).
Thanks to coordinated efforts between Canadian authorities and the FBI, Khan was taken into custody before he could execute his plot. He faces charges of providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization, which could result in up to 20 years in prison (Justice)(DevDiscourse).
This arrest underscores the ongoing vigilance of law enforcement agencies to prevent terrorist activities inspired by extremist ideologies.
