Bollywood actress and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has issued a public apology after sparking controversy with her remarks on the now-repealed farm laws. In a statement that drew widespread criticism, Ranaut initially suggested that the three farm laws, which were scrapped by the Modi government in 2021 following massive farmer protests, should be reinstated. She argued that these laws were in the best interest of the farmers and encouraged them to demand their return.
However, her comments were not well-received, particularly within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which quickly distanced itself from her views. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia emphasized that Ranaut’s remarks were personal and did not reflect the party’s official stance on the farm laws
In response to the backlash, Ranaut apologized for her remarks, stating that she had not intended to cause offense. She acknowledged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to repeal the laws must be respected and that her comments did not align with the party’s stance. “I regret if I disappointed anyone with my views,” she said, adding that she now understands the sensitivity of the issue and takes her words back
This is not the first time Ranaut has faced criticism for her outspoken views. She has frequently stirred controversy with her political opinions, particularly regarding the farmers’ protests. Last month, she made inflammatory comments about the protests, which also led to a reprimand from the BJP. This latest incident has reignited debates around agricultural reforms and the political discourse surrounding the farm laws.
While Ranaut’s apology may have quelled some of the outrage, the issue remains politically sensitive, especially with assembly elections in Haryana on the horizon, where farmers played a significant role in protesting the original laws.
