As exit polls for the 2024 Assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) were released, the political landscape shows distinct trends in both regions.
In Haryana, Congress appears poised for a decisive victory, with projections estimating the party may secure around 55-62 seats in the 90-member assembly. This marks a significant comeback after years of BJP dominance. The BJP, currently the ruling party, is projected to win 18-24 seats, reflecting strong anti-incumbency sentiments. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and others are expected to gain 3-6 seats. Key to Congress’s potential success is the leadership of former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, although the party has yet to officially declare its CM candidate.
Haryana saw a 61% voter turnout, with high participation in districts like Mewat and Yamunanagar. This reflects voters’ dissatisfaction with the ruling BJP, which has faced criticism over unemployment, farmers’ issues, and law and order. The Congress has capitalized on these issues, with promises to address agrarian distress and youth employment.
In Jammu & Kashmir, the BJP is projected to emerge as the leading party, riding on the wave of nationalism and its stance on Article 370. Polls suggest the BJP could win 35-40 seats in the 90-seat assembly. The National Conference (NC), led by Farooq Abdullah, is expected to follow, with predictions giving the party 20-25 seats. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and other smaller regional players may garner 8-12 seats. Abdullah has dismissed the possibility of a post-poll alliance with the BJP, citing the party’s policies as harmful to the region’s Muslim population.
J&K’s first elections post-Article 370 abrogation saw a 49% turnout till 3 PM, showcasing moderate voter enthusiasm. The BJP’s campaign focused heavily on national security, development, and promises of better infrastructure, while opposition parties like NC and PDP concentrated on restoring statehood and protecting local identity.
Both exit polls provide early insights into the potential outcomes of the elections in Haryana and J&K, but final results will be revealed on October 8, 2024. Historically, exit polls have sometimes deviated from the actual outcomes, but they still offer valuable indications of voter sentiments.
These elections are critical for both regions, with Haryana facing issues like unemployment and agrarian distress, and J&K navigating its complex political landscape after the abrogation of Article 370. The results could significantly impact the national political scenario ahead of the 2024 general elections.
