Ola Electric has announced a major price cut for its entry-level electric scooter, the Ola S1X, reducing its cost to Rs 49,999 as part of the BOSS (Biggest Ola Season Sale). This move comes in response to declining sales in the electric two-wheeler market, with Ola recording its lowest monthly sales in 2024, selling only 23,965 units in September. This represents a significant decline, prompting the company to introduce this aggressive pricing strategy ahead of the festive season to boost sales.
The S1X model, which features a 2 kWh battery, offers a more affordable option for customers looking to switch to electric vehicles. Originally priced at Rs 74,999, the current Rs 25,000 discount is part of a limited-time offer, although Ola Electric has not specified an end date for the promotion. The initiative is aimed at regaining market share amidst rising competition from other players like TVS, Bajaj, and Ather.
One of the major challenges Ola Electric has faced recently is customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding after-sales service. The company reportedly receives over 80,000 complaints each month, which has hurt its reputation. To address these concerns, Ola is investing heavily in expanding its service network, with plans to open 1,000 new service centers by the end of the year. The company is also introducing AI-powered maintenance services through its Move OS 5 system, aimed at improving customer experience and reducing repair times.
Despite being a leader in the Indian electric scooter market, the decline in sales highlights the challenges faced by Ola and other electric vehicle manufacturers. The reduction in government subsidies under the FAME II scheme earlier this year led to price hikes across the industry, which in turn slowed consumer demand. As a result, sales have dropped significantly, with some manufacturers reporting declines of up to 66%.
Ola Electric’s price reduction is seen as a strategic move to revitalize interest in electric scooters, particularly in the budget-conscious segment. The success of the BOSS sale will be crucial in determining whether the company can reverse its declining sales trend and maintain its position as a key player in India’s growing electric vehicle market.
