On October 2, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to two towering figures in Indian history—Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri—on the occasion of their birth anniversaries. The day is significant in India as it celebrates both Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, and Shastri, the country’s second Prime Minister, known for his simplicity and leadership.
At Raj Ghat, the memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, PM Modi offered floral tributes and attended prayers. In his message, the Prime Minister highlighted how Gandhi’s principles of non-violence, truth, and compassion continue to inspire not only Indians but people around the world. He emphasized that Gandhi’s timeless teachings remain relevant and called on the younger generation to act as agents of change in line with Gandhi’s vision of unity and social harmony.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, and several Union ministers also paid their respects at Raj Ghat. Gandhi, born on October 2, 1869, led the Indian independence movement using the principles of non-violence (Ahimsa) and civil disobedience, setting an example for freedom movements worldwide.
Following his tribute to Gandhi, PM Modi paid homage to Lal Bahadur Shastri at Vijay Ghat. In a social media post, he reflected on Shastri’s enduring legacy, particularly his leadership during challenging times and his famous slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan” (Hail the Soldier, Hail the Farmer), which continues to resonate with generations of Indians. Shastri’s birth anniversary is equally significant as he played a crucial role in India’s post-independence development, particularly in strengthening the agricultural sector.
The Prime Minister’s message highlighted both leaders’ contributions toward building a united, strong India. While Gandhi’s vision focused on moral and spiritual strength, Shastri emphasized military and agricultural might. Modi encouraged citizens to draw inspiration from these figures to continue working toward India’s progress and unity(PM India)
