As Maharashtra gears up for the state elections, Congress has launched a bold campaign called Laapataa Ladies (Missing Women) aimed at highlighting issues related to women’s safety and empowerment. This campaign comes in response to the growing concerns about the state’s deteriorating record on women’s safety under the current BJP-Shiv Sena government.
The Laapataa Ladies campaign symbolically addresses the “missing” focus on women’s welfare and safety in Maharashtra’s governance, particularly under the leadership of the ruling alliance, Mahayuti. Through this initiative, Congress seeks to hold the government accountable for its failure in protecting women and promoting their rights.
The campaign is designed to resonate with women voters, as Congress draws attention to the state’s alarming rate of crimes against women and gender-related inequalities. It criticizes the government’s handling of key women-centric policies and raises concerns about the growing gap in healthcare, education, and employment opportunities for women.
The Congress party strategically timed this campaign ahead of the Maharashtra elections, targeting constituencies where women’s issues remain at the forefront. This move aims to consolidate the votes of women, who are a significant portion of the electorate. Furthermore, the Congress’ Laapataa Ladies campaign counters the government’s newly introduced Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana that promises financial assistance to women in lower-income brackets. Congress, however, argues that such initiatives are not enough to address the core issues of women’s safety and empowerment.
Through the campaign, Congress also emphasizes the importance of women’s participation in the electoral process. The party has deployed digital platforms and grassroots efforts to raise awareness about the issues women face and to mobilize them to vote for change. By emphasizing the failures of the current administration, particularly in rural areas, where women often face the brunt of neglect, Congress hopes to build on its recent electoral success in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The opposition bloc in Maharashtra, including the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction, is seeking to gain momentum from the Laapataa Ladies campaign. The upcoming elections are anticipated to be a challenging contest, with the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP alliance hoping to retain power. Congress, through its women-centric strategy, aims to sway the significant portion of female voters by appealing to their everyday struggles, offering hope for better governance, and restoring confidence in the government’s role in safeguarding women’s interests.
This campaign is seen as a critical part of Congress’ larger election strategy as it competes to re-establish its presence in the state, especially after the strong showing of the opposition in the Lok Sabha elections, where they won 30 out of 48 seats.
The use of trending social media platforms and mobilizing women at the grassroots level has helped Congress create a significant buzz around Laapataa Ladies. It also underlines a broader narrative of holding those in power accountable for the rising rates of crime and neglect toward women’s issues. As the elections approach, this campaign is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the discourse on women’s safety and political participation in Maharashtra, making it a central point of the Congress party’s bid to regain power.
By bringing these issues into the election spotlight, Congress aims to challenge the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP government’s record and propose alternative solutions that ensure greater safety, equality, and opportunity for women across Maharashtra.
