Delhi’s newly appointed Chief Minister, Atishi, has been accorded ‘Z’ category security cover just days after her swearing-in ceremony, marking a significant step for the politician who is now tasked with steering the capital amid upcoming elections. The ‘Z’ category security, one of the highest levels of protection in India, includes the deployment of around 22 security personnel working in shifts, armed guards, personal security officers (PSOs), and escort vehicles in her convoy. This type of security protocol is typically provided to high-risk political figures and is mandated by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after a thorough threat assessment.
Atishi’s security cover was implemented shortly after her swearing-in as the Chief Minister of Delhi on September 21, 2024. The decision was taken as a preventive measure in light of her elevated profile and the sensitive nature of her political role. Given her leadership position in a state that has seen heated political confrontations in recent times, ensuring her safety is a priority for law enforcement. Central agencies are also expected to periodically review the security arrangements based on evolving threat perceptions.
This development comes as Atishi takes over from Arvind Kejriwal, the former Chief Minister of Delhi and national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Kejriwal’s resignation earlier this month, due to legal challenges and allegations, has put Atishi in a key position as the face of the party in the capital. In her first press conference as Chief Minister, Atishi and her Cabinet vowed to bring Kejriwal back to the position after the next state assembly elections, scheduled for early 2025. The AAP ministers emphasized that the primary focus of the administration would be to continue the development work initiated by Kejriwal, with a renewed push on issues like pollution control and governance reforms.
Atishi’s political journey has been marked by her leadership in education reforms and her growing influence within the AAP. Known for her clear communication and dedication to public service, Atishi has been a key figure in shaping Delhi’s government policies. Her appointment as Chief Minister comes at a critical juncture, with the party looking to solidify its base and face the electoral challenges ahead.
Her new role, combined with the heightened security, highlights the stakes involved in Delhi’s political landscape. The provision of ‘Z’ security ensures that Atishi is protected while carrying out her responsibilities, especially as tensions may rise during the campaign period leading up to the elections.
Given the political climate, security concerns for leaders like Atishi are not uncommon. High-profile politicians in India often face threats due to the nature of their work, especially during politically charged periods. The central government typically assesses the threat levels through its agencies and decides on the security arrangements accordingly.
Atishi’s ascension to the Chief Minister’s post and the security cover provided to her underscore the seriousness with which her role is being treated by both her party and the central authorities. Her leadership will be under intense scrutiny, not just for the policies she will implement, but also for how effectively she can galvanize support for Kejriwal’s return and lead the AAP into the next election cycle.
As Delhi gears up for a politically dynamic period, Atishi’s leadership, combined with the robust security measures in place, signals a decisive moment for the AAP and the political future of the national capital(ABP Live)
