In a tragic incident in Haripur Kalan, Uttarakhand, two sisters, Sakshi (15) and Vaishnavi (13), were swept away by the strong currents of the Ganga river while trying to save their younger brother, Suraj, from drowning. The incident occurred on the morning of September 16, 2024, at Geeta Kutir Ghat, a popular bathing spot near Rishikesh.
The siblings, part of a family outing with neighbors, were bathing when nine-year-old Suraj began drifting in the river’s strong current. In a brave attempt to rescue him, Sakshi and Vaishnavi managed to push their brother towards the safety of the riverbank but were unable to save themselves. Both were swept away by the river’s powerful flow.
Their parents were reportedly at work when the incident occurred, and a neighbor had taken the children to the river. The local police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were immediately called to the scene, and a search operation was launched, though the sisters remained untraced as of the latest reports.
This heartbreaking event has drawn attention to the dangers of strong currents in rivers like the Ganga, especially during family outings in areas where children are often unsupervised.
Efforts are ongoing to locate the missing girls, but authorities caution the public to remain vigilant while near water bodies, especially during high-flow periods(NewsDrum)(Devdiscourse)(DAINIK JANWANI).
