In a tragic incident in Lucknow, the death toll from a building collapse in the Transport Nagar area has risen to eight, with three more bodies being recovered from the debris. The three-storey structure, housing a motor workshop and several godowns, collapsed on the evening of Saturday, September 7, 2024. Around 28 people were initially rescued with varying degrees of injury, while rescue operations are ongoing, with teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) deployed to the scene.
The collapse occurred while construction work was ongoing on the building, which had been in use for only about four years. Many of the victims were working on the ground floor at the time. According to a survivor, a crack had developed in one of the building’s pillars, raising concerns moments before the collapse.
Local authorities, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, have responded to the disaster, ordering immediate relief and free medical care for the injured. Senior officials are overseeing the ongoing rescue operations, with efforts focused on ensuring no one else remains trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about building safety regulations and oversight in the region, as the construction and use of such structures for both commercial and residential purposes come under scrutiny. Investigations into the cause of the collapse are expected to follow once rescue operations are concluded.
This disaster has deeply impacted the local community, and condolences have poured in from political leaders, including Defence Minister and Lucknow MP Rajnath Singh, who expressed sorrow for the victims and their families
