A devastating Russian missile strike in the central Ukrainian city of Poltava has resulted in the deaths of at least 51 people, including Ukrainian soldiers, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack, which targeted a military training facility and a nearby hospital, also left around 180 others injured.
The strike is one of the deadliest since the war began, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemning it as “barbaric.” The missiles hit shortly after an air raid siren, trapping many civilians under the rubble as they attempted to seek shelter. Rescue operations are ongoing, with 25 people already pulled from the debris.
The governor of Poltava, Filip Pronin, has declared three days of mourning to honor the victims. Zelenskyy has reiterated his call for more robust military aid from Western allies, emphasizing the need for air defense systems and long-range missiles to prevent further attacks.
This tragedy underscores the continued human toll of the ongoing conflict, as both sides face mounting casualties and destruction.
