A political rift has intensified between Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus and ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Yunus, in discussions with International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim AA Khan, sparked speculation about pursuing Hasina’s extradition from India to face charges of human rights violations. The conversation followed Yunus’s remarks that Hasina, currently residing in India after her resignation amid public protests, should refrain from making political statements, as it undermines diplomatic relations.

Hasina’s government, which was accused of atrocities like extrajudicial killings and mass detentions, faced severe opposition that ultimately led to her ouster in August 2024. Yunus, who heads the interim government, has not yet formalized an extradition request, but his comments have ignited debate about the likelihood of such a move. The core issue revolves around prosecuting Hasina for alleged human rights violations during her tenure. ICC involvement, particularly through Khan’s expertise in prosecuting crimes against humanity, has added a serious legal dimension to the political tensions.

While India has yet to receive any formal extradition request, the diplomatic strain is palpable. Yunus emphasized that Hasina’s continued political activities from Indian soil could jeopardize relations between the two neighboring countries, suggesting that it is an “unfriendly gesture” until Dhaka officially seeks her return. Although India and Bangladesh have an extradition treaty, the situation remains delicate due to political sensitivities in both countries.

The speculation around extradition has polarized public opinion in Bangladesh. Some view it as a necessary step for justice, while others perceive it as politically motivated, with Yunus seeking to solidify his leadership. Hasina’s allies argue that the accusations against her are exaggerated, crafted to suppress her political influence. Meanwhile, Yunus has faced calls to address broader issues, such as enforced disappearances under Hasina’s rule, before focusing solely on her extradition.

In conclusion, Yunus’s recent actions, particularly his discussions with the ICC, have raised the stakes in Bangladesh’s ongoing political upheaval. Whether Hasina will be extradited remains uncertain, but the situation has already strained relations between India and Bangladesh.
