A significant controversy has erupted within the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) as nearly 500 officers have formally complained to the finance ministry about a toxic work culture under the leadership of Chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch. The complaints allege that the management uses harsh and unprofessional language, imposes unrealistic work targets, and closely monitors employees’ movements, creating a hostile and stressful work environment.
The officers detailed these grievances in a five-page letter titled “Grievances of SEBI Officers – A Call for Respect,” accusing the leadership of fostering a culture of fear that has negatively impacted their mental health and work-life balance. Despite raising concerns internally, the employees felt compelled to escalate the issue to the finance ministry after their complaints were reportedly ignored.
In response, SEBI has claimed that the issues raised have been addressed and that changes have been implemented to improve the work environment. However, the officers remain dissatisfied, citing ongoing stress and unrealistic expectations imposed by the management(ABP Live, India Today)
